Understanding Gluten Free Disclaimer Statements

Today, let's talk about disclaimer statements on food packaging. What do these disclaimers mean, and can you eat the product? Here are the three main types of disclaimers you might encounter:

1. CONTAINS

If the packaging says "CONTAINS" followed by wheat, rye, barley, or regular oats, don’t eat it. This is straightforward. Wheat is considered a top allergen, but rye and barley aren’t necessarily classified as allergens. However, they still contain gluten. So, if the product contains any of these grains, it is not gluten-free.

2. MAY CONTAIN

"May contain" is a bit of a gray area and requires your best judgment. This disclaimer means that the product was made in a factory that also processes gluten-containing foods. For example, a food bar might be produced on the same lines as gluten-containing bars. Although the lines are cleaned, there might be traces of gluten. You need to decide your comfort level with this potential risk.

3. MADE IN A SHARED FACILITY

This is usually a "cover your bases" statement. It means the product was made in a facility that also processes gluten-containing ingredients. While it likely doesn’t contain gluten, there’s a small risk of cross-contamination. This statement is particularly important for those with severe wheat allergies.

Gluten-Free Certification

If a product has a gluten-free certification label, it’s safe to eat, even if it was made in a shared facility. This certification means the product has been tested and meets the standards for being gluten-free.
