What Is The Impact of Accidental Gluten Exposure If You Have Celiac Disease?

If you have celiac disease, understanding how careful you need to be with gluten is crucial. While I'm not a medical professional, I want to share some perspective on what happens when someone with celiac disease consumes gluten.

Accidents Happen

Accidents will happen occasionally—gluten can sneak into your diet. Think of this like falling down and skinning your knee. If it happens once in a while, it might hurt, you might get a bruise, or slightly break the skin, but it will probably heal quickly, and you'll be on your way again.

However, if you fall down on that same knee day after day, even if it's just a little fall, it will start to hurt worse and the damage won't heal. In fact, the damage will increase over time. Accidental gluten ingestion is like that—occasional incidents are part of life, but they should be minimized.

Avoiding Constant Damage

Be vigilant about cross-contamination. You don't want to be "falling down and skinning your knee" every day. I'm concerned when I hear people with celiac disease say that a little bit of cross-contamination is okay. Just because you don't experience symptoms doesn't mean damage isn't occurring. Silent celiac disease is a serious issue; you might not have symptoms until significant internal damage has already been done.

Stay Vigilant

Be careful and mindful of your diet. Avoiding gluten completely is essential for managing celiac disease and preventing long-term damage. Remember, a little bit of gluten can cause more harm than you realize, even if you don't feel it right away.

Stay safe and take care of your health by being diligent about avoiding gluten in all forms.
