Gonzo, gluten-free dog

Although dogs and cats are not affected by celiac disease, you may find that they thrive on grain-free food. Here are a few questions to consider when deciding on pet food:

1. Does your pet eat in your kitchen or near any food preparation areas?

If your pet food contains gluten grains, there is potential for cross-contamination from crumbs and dust from dry food. Realistically, this is a very small risk.

2. Do young children with celiac disease feed the pet?

Although most children will not eat pet food, crumbs or residue on their fingers can be a problem if they put their hands in their mouths.

(Side note: I've known many primary school-aged kids to eat kibbles on a dare, mostly boys, including one of my own children.)

The key advantage of using gluten-free pet food is to eliminate any potential cross-contamination at home.

In general, you should choose the food that is best for your pet. While gluten can be present in pet food, it does not pose a significant risk.
