Singapore Airline's Gluten Free Meal

May 05, 20232 min read

Hello Gluten Free Travel Friends!

One of the biggest worries about traveling gluten-free is making sure you have enough food to eat during your journey. I recently flew a long haul flight (18:30 hours) and took lots of notes on food along the way. Check out the video about to see everything I ate.

I flew Singapore Airlines on a long haul flight from Singapore to New York on May 30, 2022. I pre-ordered a gluten-free meal a week before my flight.

I arrived at the airport early so that I would have time to walk around and check out what gluten-free options were available in the departure terminal. (There are a few, but not many. For a full list, see our Gluten Free Traveler's Guide to Navigating Singapore).

I headed up the SilverKris lounge around 8pm. The lounge is newly renovated and has recently reopened. The once expansive buffet has been scaled back. Is spoke directly to the staff in the lounge and was advised that they could prepare the following gluten-free meals for me:

  • Gluten-free pasta

  • Vegetarian crystal dumplings

  • Bee hoon noodles

  • Congee

The staff member I spoke with did not seem confident about the options or the presence of cross contamination in the kitchen. It has been reported that other travelers have had difficulty getting gluten-free options at the lounge since my last visit.

Once boarded, the flight attendant confirmed by gluten-free meal selection.

Dinner

The first meal was served about an hour after takeoff. It included:

  • Chicken with quinoa salad

  • Beef stew, potatoes, vegetables

  • Lychee in jello

  • Wrapped bread roll from The Whole Kitchen

Breakfast

Breakfast was served halfway through the flight and consisted of a fruit cup, bread roll, and sausage with baked beans, potatoes, spinach, & mushrooms.

Snack

Approximately two hours before landing, the cabin attendants came around with snack boxes. Mine was specifically marked gluten-free with my seat number. Inside was a warm turkey Sandwich. It was surprisingly good and I quickly ate the whole thing.

For photos of all my meals, watch the attached video.

Note: Due to COVID-19 changes, gluten-free meals are not available on all routes. Even if you are able to pre-order a gluten-free meal, it is wise to also bring along ample food for your fight in your carry-on bag. Flight delays, computer glitches, and unforeseen problems may prevent your meal from being loaded onto your flight.
