Hidden Gluten: What You Need to Know!
Many people associate gluten-free living with simply cutting out bread and flour-based products like cookies and pizza. But did you know that gluten lurks in numerous everyday foods? Let me shed some light on a few surprising examples.
Gluten in Candy
While it may seem innocent, many candies contain gluten. Chewy licorice (Twizzlers) contains wheat flour, making them off-limits for those avoiding gluten. Malt balls (Maltesers and Whoppers) include gluten in the form of barley malt. Any candy that includes a cookie (Twix, & Kit Kat) also contains gluten.
Gluten in Sauces
It's important to note that many sauces contain gluten as well. Barbecue sauce, for example, often contains malt, while some sauces (oyster sauce, hoisin sauce) use wheat flour as a thickening agent.
Gluten in Drinks
But here's the kicker – gluten can even hide in your drinks. While it's easy to associate gluten with solid foods like bread and cookies, drinks can also be culprits. Milo, for instance, contains barley malt and is not gluten-free. Similarly, beer, made from wheat, barley, and rye, is a no-go for those avoiding gluten. Even seemingly harmless barley water is off-limits as it's made from cooked barley.
