It is Celiac & Gluten Awareness Month!

Today we explore words commonly mistaken for gluten and clarify whether they are truly gluten-free.

Glutinous Rice

First up, glutinous rice. Despite its name, this sticky rice is actually gluten-free! Learn why the term "glutinous" refers to its texture rather than gluten content, making it a safe choice for gluten-sensitive individuals.

Glucose

What about glucose? Often used as a sweetener, glucose is another term that can cause confusion. Sugar is generally always gluten-free. Even those derived from wheat are considered gluten-free due to their highly processed nature; but people with a true wheat allergy should avoid wheat derived sugar syrup.

Monosodium Glutamate

Finally, we address monosodium glutamate (MSG). Despite the controversy surrounding this flavor enhancer, rest assured that it is indeed gluten-free. The term "glutamate" does not imply gluten content. Although it is possible that is can be derived from wheat, the gluten is completely hydrolyzed and removed during the processes.
